Lymphoedema: The pain discussion

Whilst studying the conditions associated with use of compression hosiery it has become clear that there are many people in this world that are suffering, and many more that do not believe the sufferers pain is real.

It is a sad truth that the majority of non-sufferers take their good health for granted, and do not always take a sufferers pain into consideration when passing comment, as displayed below in a comment made concerning the pain of venous condition, Lymphoedema.

Although for a number of people the chance of developing a venous insufficiency is slim, nobody is completely immune and everyone should consider the wear of preventative hosiery to reduce their chance of ever having to worry about the development of a venous disease in their own body.

In November 2010 The Washington Post published an article concerning Lymphoedema which included a quote from a lady named Denise Krisinger. She said:

“I applaud The Post for highlighting this little-known condition. However, the article expresses a significant inaccuracy.

“Lymphoedema is not a painful condition”

Met with outrage from Lymphoedema sufferers, the comment caused anger in many, with one response stating:

“Lymphoedema hurts, and the pain is variable and usually improves with treatment. Of course, any new or unexplained swelling should be investigated medically, but to tell a patient with lymphedema that his or her pain is fictitious and not due to disease is to deny their reality”

As a person who does not suffer from Lymphoedema it is not from a personal viewpoint, but from the view of sufferers I have encountered, that I give the opinion that Lymphoedema is in fact painful
