In the news – the benefits of compression

Have you read the story about the benefits of compression on the BBC website? It reported that cheap inflatable leg wraps could soon be saving the lives of patients following a stroke. The research, featuring 2,876 patients with findings published in The Lancet, showed there were fewer clots with the wraps, which squeeze the legs to keep blood flowing and prevent blood clots from forming. The Stroke Association said the results were “extremely encouraging” and had the potential to save thousands of lives. The benefits of this kind of squeezing of the legs are, of course, well known to the Daylong team, as is helping with the effects of deep vein thrombosis. DVT (deep vein thrombosis), or a clot in the leg, is normally associated with long flights, but is a problem for people in all walks of life who are unable to move much. When you’re unable to move, and your legs are still for long periods, your circulation is effected, your blood stops being pumped from your legs up to your heart, and blood clots can form. These are extremely dangerous, and can even prove fatal. Inflatable leg wraps are one innovative solution which we should all welcome. For people throughout the UK, compression tights, compression stockings and compression socks are also an effective solution to the pain and dangers of poor circulation. shutterstock_115707265Compression tights, stockings and socks perform a similar function to the inflatable leg wraps, in that they compress your legs and force your blood back to your heart. This compression improves how your blood circulates through your veins, helping conditions such as tired, aching legs, varicose veins, spider veins, minor leg ulcers, early stage DVT, early stage lymphoedema and swollen ankles during pregnancy. The graduation in compression hosiery means the compression is different in different parts of your foot, ankle and leg. It is tightest at the ankle and gradually gets looser as it goes up the leg. This helps circulate your blood and effectively forces your blood away from the problem area and up towards your heart.
